Описание к видео Corn School: Identifying the R6 stage and timing harvest to maximize yield potential

With all of the time and money spent in the field seeding, spraying, and spreading nutrients, the correct timing for harvest is one of the last steps to ensuring a good quality yield.

In this episode of RealAgriculture's Corn School, Aidan Filipchuk of PRIDE Seeds discusses the importance of knowing how to tell when a field has reached R6 stage or physiological maturity. At the point that corn hits this stage, the kernels no longer receive any extra nutrients such as starch or moisture. This is also when they begin to dry down and growers can be confident that hitting the fields with the combine is in the near future.

When a grower combines too early and there is too much moisture in the kernels, both quality and yield will suffer, the kernels basically turn to mush as they go through the combine, Filipchuk explains. On the other hand, leaving combining until later in the season comes with its own risks. While the kernels may dry down nicely, growers are then at the mercy of the weather and are more likely to see some lodging, or plants toppling over from snow.

As long as the field is seeing 10 degree or higher days, the corn will continue to dry down at approximately half a percent per day, Filipchuk says. Watch the full episode to find out how to check cobs for this stage, as well as what pests and diseases to look for at physiological maturity.
