We met up with one of the founders of the Farmer's Land Trust, Ian McSweeney, to talk about the challenges of land use, ownership culture, and zoning - all the things weighing on the issue of how to connect people who want to farm and restore lands with the living spaces that need them. This is a wide-ranging conversation that got into colonialism, economic systems, and the collapse of globalized systems, and pressed into a future where hopefully we collectively and proactively prep for these collapses and envision new scenarios for humanity and the environment living in harmony. From grassroots economic models to the modern back-to-the-land movement in Russia, and plumbing the depths and evils of colonization, we share insights into how land trusts, permaculture design, ecosystem restoration and resilient community planning can strengthen local food systems, heal the environment, and forge interpersonal bonds. Of course we highlight the vast importance of Indigenous knowledge systems, focusing on care and reciprocity with the living community of lands and waters, because all of this has a very spiritual component as well.
