Pete Rose returns to the Cincinnati Reds as a player manager, after a trade from Montreal and making his managerial debut against the Chicago Cubs.
Recorded and Digitalized off some pre recorded VHS tapes ive had in the archives since the mid 90s., and has been recently restored with some slight color corrections and a new audio track added in post.
Original WLWT Broadcast with Ray Lee and Ken Wilson from Riverfront Stadium, Starting pitchers Dick Ruthven for Jim Frey's Cubs, and Mario Soto gets the call on Rose's first game as a player manager for the Reds.
Cubs take early lead in the first on a RBI single from Gary Matthews in the first scoring Bob Dernier who lead off the game with a double. Reds come right back in the bottom of the 1st with 3 runs including a RBI single from Rose and pair of RBIs from Reds catcher Brad Gulden and a RBI double from Dave Concepcion. Mario Soto pitches a complete game, giving up 4 runs on 5 hits including Cubs 1B Leon Durham hitting his 17th HR of the season in the 3rd. Soto strikes out 4 while walking 5, and picks up his 13th win of the season (13-6) while Cubs Rick Ruthven goes 6 innings, giving up 5 runs on 9 Reds hits including HRs from Cesar Cedeno (7) in the 3rd, and Dave Parker (12) in the 7th inning..Ruthven is relieved by George Frazier in the 7th.
Mario gets the win (13-6) and Ruthven with the loss (3-8).
