Who remembers the great character of Archie Bunker from All in the Family? We love Carroll O’Connor’s performance as the irascible, bigoted, yet charming Archie Bunker and cannot imagine any other acting filling this role. But did you know that there was another actor who was indeed considered for the role? One has to remember that even by earlier standards, All in the Family was a revolutionary show. Regardless of how crass Archie Bunker was, audiences had to like him. If they hated him, the show wouldn’t last one season. Needless to say, it would also lead to huge financial losses for the production company.

To play it safe, it was best to find an established actor. This actor had to be someone whom American audiences loved and related to. It had to be an actor that had a reputation for being sweet and gentle – in contrast to the character he would play onscreen. But no matter what Norman Lear or anyone else wanted, it was inevitable that Carroll O’Connor was destined to play Archie Bunker.

The actor was the embodiment of the protagonist of All in the Family and would play him for 9 seasons, and then a later for four seasons in the show Archie Bunker’s place. All in the Family became of one America’s most beloved and important sitcoms. It was one of the first to blend comedy with drama. It also dealt with a variety of serious subjects, including topical subjects at the time.

To this day, it remains the golden standard that few modern sitcoms are able to match up to. But what would have happened if Carroll O’Connor hadn’t played Archie Bunker?
