The Elroy Air Cargo is an unmanned cargo aircraft developed by American startup company Elroy Air, intended to replace land delivery trucks on inefficient routes with unmanned aircraft.

Elroy Air initially pursued the electric aircraft VTOL air taxi market, but turned to autonomous cargo aircraft to avoid starting out dealing with the complications of passenger-carrying certification.

By early 2018, a full-scale prototype had been tested at Half Moon Bay Airport, south of San Francisco. Its lift system—rotors, motors and controllers—was rigged on a truck-based testbed to verify the aerodynamic lift produced and the aircraft noise levels for urban areas operations.

After the first successful test flight for Elroy Air, the startup that aims to put its heavy-lift cargo drones in the air, delivering larger-than-average payloads by 2020.

It’s a modest beginning to what could eventually become a trillion-dollar business, if you believe the analysts who think autonomous drone delivery — in particular, cargo drone delivery — has the potential to disrupt the logistics industry.

Key specialty of end-to-end aerial cargo delivery system:

• No airport required.
• No electric charging station required.
• Efficient hybrid-electric power train.
• Autonomous flight and advanced safety architecture.

The Elroy Chaparral will have six electric rotors for vertical takeoff and landing and will transition to winged flight once in the air, with a pusher propeller behind its 29-foot-long rear wing that will be powered by a 100-horsepower gasoline engine.

The batteries will recharge in flight. That will make it more capable of quick turnarounds and better suited for use in emerging countries that might not have robust electric grids, as well as in disaster areas.

Mark Blair, who retired in 2017 from FedEx after 27 years in air operations, says he’s cheerleading the freight drone startups on but that there are a “jillion” operational challenges they’ll have to solve to earn space in a U.S. market where there are no appreciable holes in service.

The venture capital firms backing Elroy are Catapult Ventures, Levitate Capital, Lemnos, Precursor Ventures, Haystack, Shasta Ventures, Homebrew, 122 West, Amplify Partners, Hemisphere Ventures, the E14 Fund and the Diamond Stream Partners.
