The Dominion of Canada was formed on July 1, 1867, following a series of negotiations and compromises between the British government, the Province of Canada (comprising present-day Ontario and Quebec), Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. The creation of the Dominion was a response to several internal and external factors that shaped Canadian history and influenced its territorial expansion.

This short video is intended to be a "minds on" or "action" activity for students in a history class. While it was designed to connect to the Ontario Grade 8 history curriculum (see curriculum expectations below), it can be used by a number of different programs relating to the topic of Creating Canada, 1850–1890
