Sekou Odinga, born Nathanial Burns, was a founding member of the New York chapter of the Black Panther Party (BPP) and the Black Panther International Section. He was a member of the group known as the "Panther 21" in New York City.

Prior to his involvement with the Black Panther Party, Odinga joined the Organization of African American Unity, founded by Malcolm X, in 1965. In 1968, he helped establish the Bronx chapter of the BPP and became the section leader.

After facing police repression and warrants in 1969, Odinga went underground. He was part of the Black Liberation Army (BLA) until his capture in 1981. He was charged with six counts of attempted murder of police, stemming from a defensive shooting during a police chase, as well as nine acts of a RICO indictment for his involvement in the liberation of Assata Shakur and the expropriation of an armored truck. He was convicted and sentenced to 25 years to life of state time and a consecutive 40 years of federal time.

He was released from prison in 2014 after serving 33 years. Following his release, he continued to be an activist, fighting for justice and the release of other political prisoners. Odinga passed away on January 12, 2024, at the age of 79.
