The Arc de Triomphe is one of the most famous monuments in Paris, standing at the western end of the Champs-Élysées. Commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1806 after his victory at the Battle of Austerlitz, it was designed to honor the French army and commemorate the soldiers who fought in the Napoleonic Wars. The names of generals and battles are inscribed on its inner and outer surfaces, and beneath the arch lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a tribute to the soldiers who died in World War I.
