潮汕地區，簡稱潮汕，是嶺東的主要部分（註：嶺東在此處是指蓮花山脈以東，包括潮汕、閩南、梅縣等地區；狹義的嶺東僅指梅縣一帶，較為少用），是廣東省潮州市、汕頭市、揭陽市等市，歷史上在潮州府內由海陽縣、潮陽縣、饒平縣、普寧縣、澄海縣、惠來縣、 豐順縣、揭陽縣組成的潮州八邑，語言上通行潮州話的地區。但原屬潮州府的豐順縣在中華人民共和國成立後改屬梅州，所以現時一般不將其視作潮汕地區的一部分；而同樣情況的大埔縣，以及由曾屬汕頭地區管轄的海豐、陸豐兩縣組成的汕尾市，由於在歷史上屬於潮州府的時間較短或沒有，因此民俗與潮州府其他地區不相通，不曾屬於潮汕地區。
「潮汕」名稱來自1904年建設潮州到汕頭的鐵路，得名潮汕鐵路，後來潮汕成為現今潮州、汕頭、揭陽這三個地級市的通稱。潮汕地區在歷史上為潮州府，故海外潮汕移民後裔常以「潮州」稱呼。

惠來靖海風力發電廠石碑山風力發電場，是目前中國國內裝置容量最大的風力發電場；中國第一座興建在江河沿岸的內陸核能試驗發電廠，位於韓江中游的神砂村；籌建揭陽烏嶼核電廠，位於惠來縣仙庵鎮東北方6公里外的烏嶼，靠近汕頭市。

Chaoshan area, referred to as Chaoshan, is the main part of Lingdong (Note: Lingdong here refers to the east of the Lotus Mountain Range, including Chaoshan, Minnan, Meixian and other areas; the narrow sense of Lingdong refers only to the Meixian area, which is less used), and is the city of Chaozhou, Shantou, Jieyang and other cities in Guangdong Province. Historically, the Chaozhou Eight Counties in Chaozhou Prefecture, which consisted of Haiyang County, Chaoyang County, Raoping County, Puning County, Chenghai County, Huilai County, Fengshun County, and Jieyang County, are the areas where Chaozhou dialect is spoken. However, Fengshun County, which was originally under Chaozhou Prefecture, was transferred to Meizhou after the founding of the People's Republic of China, so it is generally not considered as part of the Chaoshan area now; and Dapu County, which is in the same situation, and Shanwei City, which is composed of Haifeng and Lufeng counties that were once under the jurisdiction of Shantou Prefecture, has been under Chaozhou Prefecture for a short time or not at all in history, so the folk customs are not connected with other areas of Chaozhou Prefecture, and they have never belonged to the Chaoshan area.
The name "Chaoshan" comes from the construction of the railway from Chaozhou to Shantou in 1904, which was named Chaoshan Railway. Later, Chaoshan became the common name for the three prefecture-level cities of Chaozhou, Shantou and Jieyang. The Chaoshan area was Chaozhou Prefecture in history, so the descendants of Chaoshan immigrants overseas often call it "Chaozhou".

Among the three cities in eastern Guangdong, there is Shantou, one of the four earliest special economic zones to open to the outside world. In 2007, the total GDP of the four cities in eastern Guangdong was 210.748 billion yuan, accounting for 6.56% of the total GDP of Guangdong Province. Among them, Shantou ranked 11th in the province and ranked first among the four cities; Jieyang ranked 14th in the province and ranked second among the four cities; Chaozhou ranked 18th in the province and ranked third among the four cities. (Fengshun County is usually not included in the Chaoshan area in economics)

The Shibeishan Wind Farm of Huilai Jinghai Wind Power Station is currently the largest wind farm in China in terms of installed capacity; China's first inland nuclear power test power station built along the river is located in Shensha Village in the middle reaches of the Hanjiang River; the Jieyang Wuyu Nuclear Power Station is under construction, located in Wuyu, 6 kilometers northeast of Xian'an Town, Huilai County, close to Shantou City.
