Unless you like waiting for your shower to heat up — or perhaps taking cold showers — you really need to be flushing your water heater annually. That’s because sediment settles at the bottom of your water heater tank, causing clogs, reducing efficiency and shortening the life of this vital household system. Flush it regularly to avoid getting the cold shoulder from your water heater.

Here’s how to keep your water heater heating your water in 10 steps:
1. Shut the power off.
2. Turn off the water feeding the tank.
3. Let the hot water in the tank cool to avoid getting burned.
4. Attach a hose to the drain tap near the base.
5. Run the hose into a bucket.
6. Open the valve and let that filth flow.
7. When your bucket fills up, shut the valve off, empty the bucket and repeat until the water flows clear.
8. Close the tap.
9. Turn the water at the top of the tank back on.
10. Turn the unit back on
