Introduction to Chinese Opera

At the International College of Music (ICOM), we recently hosted a special Chinese Opera event that brought together the rich traditions of opera with the fresh sounds of modern music. It was a beautiful fusion, offering a unique way to experience the timeless charm of Chinese opera with a contemporary twist.

Our talented ICOM musicians brought this vision to life, blending traditional Chinese instruments with modern ones to create something truly magical. This event reflected our passion for celebrating culture and creativity, inviting everyone to enjoy the beauty of Chinese opera in a new and exciting way.

1st song : Li Hua Song ( Ode to Pear Blossom)

Li Hua Song (Ode to the Pear Blossom), drawn from the famous Beijing opera The Precious Consort of the Tang Dynasty, inspired by Bai Juyi’s poem The Song of Everlasting Sorrow, expressing the beauty and fleeting life of Yang Guifei.

2nd song : Di Nü Hua (Princess Changping) + Tian Mi Mi (Sweet Honey) Medley

Our medley features Di Nü Hua (Princess Changping), a classic from the renowned Cantonese opera by Hong Kong playwright Tong Dik-sang, featuring the captivating Autumn Thoughts at the Dressing Table with and Teresa Teng’s beloved song Tian Mi Mi (Sweet Honey). This unique arrangement blends the elegance of traditional opera with the nostalgic charm of a song that resonated in Hong Kong during the 80s and 90s. Tian Mi Mi tells the story of two young lovers, Li Xiaojun and Li Qiao, navigating life from mainland China to Hong Kong and New York, encapsulating the emotions and memories of a pivotal era leading up to Hong Kong’s handover.

3rd song : Chi Ling (Red Actor)

Chi Ling (Red Actor) powerfully portrays the resilience of Chinese opera performers and citizens during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Originating from the wartime era, the song honors those who used their art to resist the Japanese invasion, embodying the spirit of defiance and determination to protect their culture and homeland.
