Lets go mushroom hunting!

In this fall walkabout we will identify some common wild (and domesticated) edibles, and then talk about some of the folklore pertaining to some of the plants and fungi we find.

In particular we will be foraging for chickweed, cows, shaggy parasol mushrooms and common sorrel as well as several interesting varieties of fairy toadstool and little brown mushroom that are all popping up over the fields and pastures this October.

These latter fungi do not have culinary purpose, and are not for eating, but do feature strongly in the mythology of Britain and Ireland in the lore of goblins, elves and fairies as well as most likely playing a part in pre Christian pagan religion and spirituality, folk magic and witchcraft.

Especially at this time of year, when the veil is thin, at Halloween, also known as the Celtic festival of Samhain, celebrating summer's end and in honour of the dead.

I love autumn. Everything feels alive. The hinge of the year.
