What does this day mean?

Ashwin Amavasya, which marks the end of Pitru Paksha (the fortnight dedicated to ancestors), is one of the most important Amavasyas of the year. On this day:

All Shraddha and Tarpan rituals for ancestors are performed — especially for those whose exact death tithi is unknown.

It is believed that the departed ancestors’ souls attain peace, and the living receive their blessings.

This day also signifies the close of ancestral duties for the period of Pitru Paksha, and in many regions it coincides with beginning of celebrations like Durga Puja.
