F261, or in Icelandic "Emstruleið", is an F-road leading to the more central part of southern Icelandic highlands. F261 leads south of Landmannalaugar area and north of Þórsmörk. These are both amazingly beautiful areas.

Almost every F-road in Iceland will serve you with breath-taking views and F261 is no different. The further into highlands you go, the better the views. Ideally you want to do this in good weather and with good car.

There is one major river crossing on F261 - Blafjallakvisl river, near the eastern end of the road, so you may still drive up to that point and if you don't feel like crossing, then turn back. We wrote more about F261 river crossing in the link below:
