New South Wales Yamaha rider Stephen Gall won the prestigious 1978 Mister Motocross (Mr. MX) series held over four rounds at Tivoli (Queensland), Wallan (Victoria), Clarendon (South Australia) and Amaroo Park (New South Wales). Anthony Gunter (NSW, Suzuki) lead the series early, with Gall holding a narrow points lead heading into the final over Swedish expatriate Pelle Granquist (Husqvarna) , who won the second and third rounds in the mud. But after a nervous start when his engine stopped, Gall won the final three races of the year to win his first Mr. MX title.
