We often respond defensively to criticism because we take it personally. We take it personally to the degree that we fear something is inherently wrong with us and needs to be fixed. Sometimes our defenses are an attempt to retaliate and get them to feel as badly as we are feeling.

The practice of translating judgments into underlying feelings and needs can a liberating, soothing, and option-rich response to criticism. Instead of hearing what people are saying, practice trying to hear what they mean. Here are a few ways to start translating criticism into the needs underlying the situation:

• Translate the message to a please or a thank you
• What is the invitation to make their life better?
• Don't mistake that it is actually about you
• What are the unmet needs behind the message?
