Megalodon, one of the largest predators in history, continues to captivate the public imagination. However, the question remains: Was this apex predator merely an oversized great white shark, and is it still lurking in the ocean's depths? Emma Bernard, curator of the Museum's fossil fish collection, clarifies the facts and myths surrounding megalodon.

Size of Megalodon
The earliest fossils of megalodon (Otodus megalodon, previously classified as Carcharodon or Carcharocles megalodon) date back 20 million years. This massive shark dominated marine ecosystems for the next 13 million years before becoming extinct approximately 3.6 million years ago.

Megalodon was the largest shark and one of the largest fish to ever exist. Contrary to its portrayal in the 2018 film The Meg, estimates suggest that the megalodon measured between 15 and 18 meters long, significantly shorter than the fictional 23-meter creature. This size is comparable to that of today’s largest whale sharks, which can reach up to 18.8 meters. Current size estimates derive from tooth measurements, as complete megalodon skeletons have yet to be discovered; megalodon teeth can grow as long as 18 centimeters.

Jaw Structure and Bite Force
Megalodon’s jaw was capable of opening to an impressive width of 2.7 by 3.4 meters, large enough to engulf two adult humans side by side. Its jaws housed 276 teeth, and studies estimating its bite force suggest it may have had one of the strongest bites in the animal kingdom, with estimates ranging from 108,514 to 182,201 Newtons. For context, humans exert a bite force of about 1,317 Newtons, while great white sharks are estimated to bite with a force of around 18,216 Newtons.

Appearance of Megalodon
Reconstructive depictions of megalodon have traditionally depicted it as a gigantic version of the great white shark. However, new research indicates that O. megalodon likely had a shorter snout and a flatter jaw. Its pectoral fins were also disproportionately long, similar to those of modern blue sharks.

Research indicates that the lineage of megalodon traces back over 100 million years, with its oldest known ancestor, Otodus obliquus, reaching lengths of around 10 meters. Interestingly, it coexisted with the ancestors of today’s great white shark, suggesting potential competition for resources.

Habitat of Megalodon
Megalodon thrived in warm tropical and subtropical waters globally, with fossilized teeth discovered on every continent except Antarctica. Significant finds have been made along the east coast of North America, particularly in North and South Carolina and Florida, as well as in Morocco and parts of Australia.

Rarity of Megalodon Teeth
Fossilized remains of megalodon are predominantly teeth, as sharks continuously shed their teeth throughout their lives. Estimates suggest that a single shark can lose up to 40,000 teeth in its lifetime, increasing the likelihood of fossilization. While teeth are robust and prone to fossilization, other soft tissues are rarely preserved, making teeth the primary means of studying these ancient creatures.

Megalodon is believed to have gone extinct at the end of the Pliocene, around 2.6 million years ago, coinciding with a period of global cooling. The precise timeline of its extinction is unclear, but evidence suggests that many large marine animals faced extinction during this time, leading to a drastic reduction in available prey.

The decline in ocean temperatures likely reduced megalodon’s habitat and affected its prey species. Additionally, changes in sea levels due to polar ice formation may have destroyed coastal nurseries vital for the survival of young megalodon. Recent studies also suggest that competition with great white sharks for food may have contributed to its decline.

Is Megalodon Still Alive?
Emma Bernard emphatically states that megalodon is not alive today. "If an animal as large as megalodon still existed in the oceans, we would undoubtedly have evidence," she asserts. The presence of large bite marks on marine animals and the ongoing discovery of megalodon teeth in substantial quantities would provide clear indicators of its existence. Furthermore, as a warm-water species, megalodon would not thrive in the colder, deeper oceanic waters where it might evade detection.
