TRANSCRIPT: My name is Alan Desmond- I'm a Doctor of Audiology and I will be on the faculty as an assistant professor of Otolaryngology.
My specialty is vestibular disorders and inner ear disorders for complaints such as vertigo, lightheadedness, dizziness, poor balance, falling, or fear of falling.
I'm intrigued by the science aspect of how the inner ear works and how such a small part of the human body is responsible for so much as far as normal function and how much it can devastate someone's quality of life when it dysfunctions.
Well my primary patient care philosophy is to be competent and be knowledgeable and give my entire attention to the patient- actually take what I've learned and be an advocate for the patient and make sure that they are getting the best care that is available to them.
The best part of working with patients for me is to see the look of relief on their face when they understand that someone listens and understands what they're talking about. The second part that is really pleasurable to me is when they come back telling me that they feel a lot better that their treatment was effective and they're getting their quality of life back.
Being a patient has made me understand that patients require two things to feel good about their visit: one is to know that you're compassionate, that you're interested in trying to help their problems; and the second is that you're competent, that you know what you're doing, that you're well-trained and that they're getting the best care available anywhere.
Wake Forest, in my mind, is the best hospital in North Carolina- and one of the best hospitals in the country. And my co-workers are among the best people in their field anywhere.
I am half Italian, but culturally, I am 110% Italian. Nobody comes to my house without a full belly and a glass of good red wine. An old saying in my house is: If you're in my house, I'm feeding you.
