When you hear the delightful song of a male Common Rosefinch (Carpodacus erythrinus), you expect to find a bird with striking red plumage. However, a male in its second calendar year (born last year) sings just as prominently but has not yet acquired the vivid red colors of an adult bird, making it look identical to a female.
Adult males Common Rosefinch have a striking red on the head, breast, and rump, which contrasts with their brown wings and back.
