How to know your risk for COPD?

It is too simplistic to assume that everyone starts off adulthood with the same ideal lung function. Besides genetic factors that make us look different on the outside, our individual adult lung capacities are also affected by environmental factors during our development in childhood and even in utero, our lung function have different start-off points in early adulthood. The trajectories that our lung function takes in life may also vary considerably as we are continually affected by different environmental factors. Smoking in adulthood is a major risk factor for COPD, but as we have seen, it is not the only one since risk factors for COPD include our genetic makeup and environmental factors in childhood and adult life. The only way to know if you are at risk of COPD is to measure your lung function trajectory through life. You can easily test your lung function using a spirometer. The procedure is known as spirometry. Experts now advise performing spirometry early in life in order to detect poor lung health and monitor its progression.
