Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni and First Lady Janet Museveni have publicly apologized for the failures and mistakes they have made during their 39 years in power.

The rare moment of humility took place during a religious event led by their daughter, Pastor Patience Rwabwogo.

The Musevenis read from a prepared statement, acknowledging the suffering endured by Ugandans under their leadership.

The apology marked a major departure from the president’s traditionally defiant stance, signaling what many believe may be an attempt to reconnect with a disenchanted public ahead of the 2026 General Election.

“We acknowledge that we are human, that we have made mistakes in one way or another,” the couple said in unison.

“Forgive us, oh Lord, and forgive us, people of Uganda.”

They took responsibility not only for their personal shortcomings but also for the conduct of government officials and security forces who acted under their administration.

Citing growing anger, neglect, and disappointment among ordinary citizens, the Musevenis admitted that the state had, in many instances, failed its people.

“As leaders of the movement, we carry the burden of all that has gone wrong by our hands or by those under our watch,” the president said.

This public repentance comes at a critical political moment. Uganda’s ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), once praised for stabilizing the country after years of conflict, has in recent years faced mounting criticism over corruption, human rights violations, and economic stagnation.

The couple’s prayerful appeal for national healing included a plea for God to “restore the favor” they once held with the people and to “soften hardened hearts” toward reconciliation.

It ended with a call to return to the original ideals of the movement unity, peace, and shared prosperity.
