Herbal drugs are one of the most used sources of the drug. this gives beneficial action without or fewer side effects. but when these herbal drugs are adulterated with substandard drug or superficially alike drug, its potency and quality changed. to check or evaluate the purity and quality of herbal drug we must go for a phytochemical screening test including- (1) Test for alkaloid (2) test for Flavonoid (3) test for Tennis (4) test for saponin (5) test for cardiac glycoside etc. in pharmacognosy and botany practicals, this phytochemical test becomes very important to find out the presence of active constituents in given crude drug sample. . Flavonoids are widely distributed in plants, fulfilling many functions. Flavonoids are the most important plant pigments for flower colouration, producing yellow or red/blue pigmentation in petals designed to attract pollinator animals. In higher plants, flavonoids are involved in UV filtration, symbiotic nitrogen fixation and floral pigmentation. They may also act as chemical messengers, physiological regulators, and cell cycle inhibitors

Procedure-
1. Alkaline Reagent Test: The stock solution (1 mL) was taken in a test tube and added few drops of dilute NaOH solution. An intense yellow colour has appeared in the test tube. It became colourless when on the addition of a few drops of dilute acid that indicated the presence of flavonoids.

2. Shinoda test- To the test solution, few drops of concentrated hydrochloric acid (HCl) were added.
Then the magnesium turnings were put into the solution and observed for appearance
of pink-red colour.
