A ₹17.56 crore redevelopment project has led to large-scale demolitions, impacting centuries-old heritage — including structures linked to Queen Ahilyabai Holkar (1791). Heritage activists, priests, locals, and the Holkar Royal Family have raised serious concerns over idols and historic carvings allegedly reduced to rubble by heavy machinery.

Protests have erupted across Varanasi, with national leaders calling it a “crime against heritage” and a betrayal of Kashi’s spiritual identity.

While authorities claim only illegal additions were removed and artefacts will be preserved, visuals from the site have fueled public outrage and skepticism.
