Reef Stonefish - A closer look

The Reef Stonefish (Synanceia verrucosa) is the most venomous fish in the ocean.
"Verrucosa" means warty which is how the skin appears like.
.The spines of the dorsal fins have sacks containing the "Verrucotoxin", an extremely poisonous venom.
The reef stonefish eats mostly small fish and crustaceans.
It captures prey by sitting motionless ,waiting for animals to swim by.
The stonefish will then suck-in its prey at an incredible speed.

The skin of the stonefish is highly diverse.
It's appearance varies from brown, yellow to pinkish, red colours or is covered all over with algae.
Stoenfish may sit within the reef or bury themselves into the sand with only eyes and mouth visible.

You have a good chance to see some at the Mangrove Bay Housereef.
I always talk to the dive guides if they've seen one and where it is located.
Although I know the reef very good and the search area is defined it is a challenge to find them... but lots of fun.
