A Cañon City mental health treatment center already under scrutiny for its use of physical restraints on children is facing new criticism from families who say they’re being punished for speaking out.

Brandy Fogle says her 13-year-old son, Channing, was discharged from the Southern Peaks Regional Treatment Center on Tuesday night — two weeks after she spoke to 9NEWS about a Disability Law Colorado report questioning high levels of restraint use by staff.

“They had all his stuff packed and told me that they were releasing him,” Fogle said. “When I told them there’s no discharge plan in place or anything, they let me know that was my problem.”

Fogle believes the timing wasn’t a coincidence.
