Have you ever seen anything like this? ❄️ This is hair ice — and it’s incredibly rare. It only forms when conditions are just right: humid, moist air, temperatures hovering around freezing, and rotting wood infected with a specific fungus called Exidiopsis effusa. Water is slowly pushed out through the wood’s pores, freezing into delicate, hair-thin filaments. The fungus plays a crucial role, helping the ice hold its shape for hours instead of collapsing.

I’ve only ever seen this phenomenon twice — both times in Teign Gorge — but this was by far the best sighting yet. It looks like angel hair… or maybe even Santa’s beard 🎅❄️

Natural wonders like this reward a keen eye and a curious mind. Nature is full of weird and wonderful surprises — most people just walk right past them.
