Willi Bründlmayer's family has been cultivating vineyards in the beautiful Kamptal (Austria) for generations. With extraordinary climatic and terroir characteristics and a large part of the love for viticulture, the Bründlmayer wines are among the most extraordinary in Austria. For experts, Willi Bründlmayer's wines shine with their incomparable depth and finesse. In addition, “they are also among the most durable in Austria”, as Rudolf Steurer, author of the renowned Austrian wine guide, once remarked. Without a doubt, the wines from the Bründlmayer winery have established themselves at the top of the league. Willi Bründlmayer, who has won numerous national and international competitions and awards, has repeatedly been voted one of the largest wine producers in the world and is one of the 50 most influential personalities in the world of wine.
In 2018 I visited the winery spontaneously during a short trip and shot a small video in the wine cellar with Vincent, Willi's son. The interview is in German, but you can find English subtitles in the settings of your YouTube player.
FEATURED WINES ---
RIED SPIEGEL GRÜNER VELTLINER
Country: Austria
Wine region: Lower Austria
Locality: Langenlois
Vintage: 2016
Variety: Grüner Veltliner
The Ried Spiegel "Vincent" Grüner Veltliner provides a special flavor and a peppery sharpness, which has a hints of fine herbs, some apricot, cloves, blossom honey, hazelnuts and orange zest. On the palate, the fruity extract sweetness is striking, which comes from a longer maceration and gives the wine a lot of power, depth and substance on the way. What particularly fascinates me, is the pressure that the cool, yet by no means distant, but rather inviting Grüner Veltliner builds on the palate. The precise, but soft acidity, which permeates the entire wine and appears gripping, fresh and lively, is also impressive. On the palate, too, the wine lives from the interplay of fruit and acid, from the spiciness, which is reminiscent of stone and pepper. All of this is first found tightly packed in this wine, then fans out impressively with air and looks downright playful, although the wine always remains attached to the soil and its origin. That is the most impressive art of winemaking.
The name of the vineyard „Spiegel“ (mirror) is said to derive from Latin “spectaculum” (“look-out”). In the ancient times of the “Limes”, the Romans probably used the spot to observe the Germanic tribes to the north of the Danube. However, still up to now most of the folks think that the name is linked to the convex vaulting of the 300 meter hill, a kind of “mirror” to the sky. The vineyards occupy an elongate ridge in the south of Langenlois. The deep, calcareous soils here are derived from a thick underlying layer of loess with a balanced mineral composition. Occasional thin layers of sandy gravels and palaeosols indicate different climatic phases during the deposition of the loess. - 95 PS.
