Meet Julie Gilbert! Julie is a novelist, biographer, playwright and teacher. She has been teaching and writing workshops nationally.
Quotes from the interview:
"I love to teach people something that they already have....but they don't know where to look for it."
"Don't have the day written on you.....write early in the day......this is a healthier writing experience."
Early in the interview, explore how Julie's great~aunt popular novelist, playwright, and short story writer, Edna Ferber influenced her and helped set the trajectory for her to become a writer. Julie reflects that she was a "hands ~ on" great ~ aunt who to this day is "never far away from my thoughts." Ferber's novels include the Pulitzer Prize-winning So Big (1924), Show Boat (1926; made into the celebrated 1927 musical), Cimarron (1930; adapted into the 1931 film which won the Academy Award for Best Picture), Giant (1952; made into the 1956 film of the same name) and Ice Palace (1958), which also received a film adaptation in 1960.
Mixed into her happy childhood was the effect and impact of Julie's mother. Her mother was a professional Broadway and television character actress wrapped in a glamorous aura. Listen in the video as Julie elaborates on her childhood memories, her mother's Carol Burnett association, the lighter era, and that her childhood is a favorite place she loves to go to. "There was always someone around who was electric!"
The passion of being a playwright is poured into her new play about her great~aunt. Julie reveals that she has moved into a space of musing over and in the "warm surreal" relationship between James Dean and her great~aunt and allowing these reflections combined with memories and touches of creative liberty into her current artistic direction. She feels that now she can view Edna in terms of a person and captures this essence and perspective in this current work. It's an expanded "consciousness" that allows Julie to see Edna in a new light.
Listen to Julie elaborate on one of Edna's New York City dinner parties, who was present, and how a turn of events led to James Dean having a personal visit to see her! Further discussion highlights receiving a Pulitzer Prize nomination for Opposite Attraction: The Lives of Erich Maria Remarque (remark) and Paulette Goddard.
As a seasoned teacher and workshop leader, Julie offers sound advice to writers with her curriculum approach and direction she implements with her writing students. Also, find out details that go into the preparation and process of writing a biography.
In addition to conducting the Writers’ Academy courses, Julie hosts the Kravis Film & Literary Club. She has also co-presented ArtSmart Lunch & Learn presentations with Lee Wolf and internationally for over two decades. She has been conducting courses for The Writers’ Academy at the Kravis Center for the past 13 years. More in the video!
