Sucker was a song I'd never heard of until a few years ago. I'd get a few emails about it every month and one day when finally decided to check it out via this youtube link someone sent me (   • John Mayer - Sucker  ) I was instantly a fan of the unreleased tune. It has a lot of similarities with the movement and chord voicings in Man on the Side. I grabbed the vid, demuxed the audio into an MP3 and began tabbing it awhile back. With no video to go on it was an audio-only transcription process which is never my favorite way to go. I like to get video so I can check hand positions. Lo and behold, Mayer did a version of it on Mayercraft and through two different shaky cell phone videos I was able to check several positions I was only 70% sure of (was it a B at the 7th position or 2nd? etc.). In any case I'm glad to finally get to it.

I've pretty much tabbed it measure by measure as the song was performed as every section has new improvised timing and content but if you are covering this yourself, you can just take the first two Verses, first Chorus, Middle and Outro and have a good run at the tune. Use the instruction and TAB as a roadmap and take what you want from it. All the detail is there if you want it.

Speaking of details. there's a lot of it having to do with the sympathetic ringing of the open A string on 60-70% of the slaps as well as some quiet bass notes trailing some of the Piano style attack on the full chords, not to mention some slap flick and triplet muted finger upstrokes going into slaps. I probably blab too much as always, I'm trying to work on that ;-)

I also incorporated a newer recording technique that ended up a little hot going into my D7000 camera causing some clipping at the odd part. I decided they they were few and far between and didn't take away too much from the instruction so I've left them in.

I ran my guitar Tony Karol guitar into a K & K sound Quantum Blender with a stereo cable for the in-guitar mic and transducer mix into a TC Helicon VoiceLive3 for some EQ and Reverb, then balanced cables stereo direct into a Zoom H4N. I use the H4N's built-in mics for the talking portion of the lesson as well (there's also a little bleed from the guitar). I balance the guitar sound and talking levels and go out a special line to mic 25dB Attenuation cable that drops the output to something the Camera can make better use of. This way I get the mix going straight into the Nikon D7000 Camera live and don't have to mix and synch audio afterwards. It's not perfect but it's getting better ;-)
