German car maker Audi has launched a self-driving, electric, SUV concept at the IAA motor snow in Frankfurt.
According to Audi, the Elaine concept has level four autonomous driving, meaning it can drive in most scenarios.
STORYLINE
Electrification and autonomous driving are two of the big trends at this year's IAA motor show in Frankfurt.
With the Elaine concept car, Audi is hitting both the trends.
The Elaine is fully electric with a range of about 500 kilometres.
But it also has level four autonomous driving. Level four is the second highest on the autonomous driving scale and means that the car should be able to handle most driving scenarios.
Separately, Audi is launching a level three autonomous driving car at the show, the A8, but the Elaine is there to give a vision of what the future might look like.
Audi is also calling the Elaine an Artificially Intelligent car. It should learn to improve driving in bad conditions.
But while AI cars might sound scary, it is needed to create a high level of autonomy, says Tim Stevens, presenter of the Roadshow on CNET.
"You definitely need a lot of smarts and a lot of artificial intelligence to recognise things like street signs that have been half covered up with snow in the wintertime. Or even to deal with changing road conditions, if a tree falls down. You can't really program a car to handle every single situation like that," he says.
The IAA motor show in Frankfurt opens to the media today, Tuesday.
The main show opens to the public on Thursday and runs through September 24.
