Pulmonary arterial hypertension is a rare, progressive disease, that affects the arteries in the lungs that lead to the heart. The pulmonary arteries become static and constricted, and can lead to right heart failure, if not diagnosed appropriately.

Treatment for pulmonary arterial hypertension consists of pump medications that run continuously, oral medications, and inhaled therapies. Without proper diagnosis and treatment, the disease progresses and can be fatal.

When I was diagnosed in 2018, I was in severe heart failure because of the pulmonary arterial hypertension. I immediately started an IV continuous medication that ran through a central line. Since then I have tried multiple therapies, and now I am on subcutaneous Remodulin through a pump and subcutaneous Catheter. The treatment is very painful and has reeked havoc on my skin. I am unfortunately allergic to most adhesive, but this has been the most positive treatment so far even with the pain and skin issues.

Knowing the symptoms can save your life like it did mine. Early intervention is imperative to survival with a disease like this.
