"Science fiction is not about the future; rather, it is about futurity. This is a crucial distinction. Science fiction does not deal in prediction. It does tell us what actually will happen, ten years, or a thousand years, or a million years from now. Rather, science fiction is about potentialities: it depicts tendencies and possibilities that are implicit in our current world situation, whether or not they ever actually come to fruition. Futurity is "real but not actual" — to use a phrase proposed separately both by Alfred North Whitehead and by Gilles Deleuze. In order to represent futurity, science fiction uses three basic techniques: extrapolation, speculation, and fabulation. In this talk, I will explore these three processes in turn."

Steven Shaviro is the DeRoy Professor of English at Wayne State University in Detroit. He writes mostly about science fiction and about music videos. His books include Connected (2003), Without Criteria (2009; Russian translation 2018); Discognition (2016); and Extreme Fabulations (2021).
