Reasons for retaining these legacy systems include critical app compatibility for older programs, the prohibitive cost of new software and hardware in some regions, and concerns over data migration issues and reliability risks associated with upgrading. Users concerned about security, particularly the bloatware and privacy concerns of Windows 11 features like CoPilot and Recall, are considering alternatives like Linux distros. To run these older operating systems safely, users can implement them within a virtual machine (VM) on a modern OS to contain security threats, or use a robust third-party antivirus program like Malwarebytes if operating online outside a VM.
