In this video I stop by the Old L.A. Zoo for a lunch break picnic and had to crash a movie set to get to the Old Zoo enclosures.
I was doing a site survey at The Greek Theater and finished up right at lunch time. The Old Zoo was right on the other side of the hill so I decided to look up a local restaurant to grab some food and head over to the zoo for lunch.
I wound up going to Yuca's, which is a tiny stand alone building on Hillhurst, just a short ways from The Greek. This place didn't look like much but it was great. People are lined up outside for a reason.
When I got to the zoo I found a movie shoot was set up and blocking my way to the zoo enclosures so I just acted like I was part of the crew and blew past their security guards and the set and got to eat my lunch in front of some of the enclosures.
They are pretty interesting to climb around in, but also kind creepy and smell like pee. I'm really glad I didn't run into any of the people who hang out in there, or have been sleeping in there.
While I was doing some research afterward for the video I came across a lot of really interesting history regarding this park. (See links below.)
What shocked me though was what I found out about the man for whom the park is named, Griffith J. Griffith. I could not believe that this guy was an attempted murderer who shot his wife in the face. Holy smokes!
I really amazes me that the city did not change the name of the park after that. That would never fly nowadays.
Not only did they not change the name, they used money that he left to the city after his death to build the Griffith Observatory after that. Amazing.
