Lesser Flamingo … Phoenicopterus minor … Watching the flocks coming in, in the late afternoon … wave upon wave of birds until the entire pan was covered and alive.
And there in the shallows I was reminded of the primitive nature of these birds … functioning as an extension of the reed-beds themselves … perfect symbiosis for sustainability.

These birds are in the only breeding colony in South Africa … one of only four breeding places in the whole of Africa ... and one of only six breeding havens in the whole world.
Of course every effort must be extended to protect and respect this fact of life.

The sun hung endlessly over the water turning from yellow to orange and deep red.
It is always a revelation to watch the shifting of form and colour … the change of light and temperature … the sounds of day creatures as they prepare for night … and the sounds of night creatures as they come to life in the slowly emerging darkness.
Such an inter-play of forces and energies … such an absolute reminder of the truth and beauty of life.

It is enough to end any day in the embrace of water, creature and light.
