In the brutal, chaotic retreat to the Pusan Perimeter in the summer of nineteen fifty, a single Black soldier from a segregated infantry regiment stayed behind on a lonely hilltop to cover his unit’s withdrawal. For two days, the sound of his heavy machine gun was the only thing that stood between his comrades and an entire enemy battalion. Then, there was silence. When American forces retook the hill, they found him frozen in place, his hands still on the trigger, a lone, silent guardian surrounded by the bodies of the enemy.
