A Hundred Ways to Kneel and Kiss the Ground: A night of Sufism and Rumi with Coleman Barks

In a rare Vancouver appearance, Coleman Barks lead our audience on a journey through the life and works of Rumi. His recitations were accompanied, as Sufi poetry often was and is, with music. On the barbat is the foremost player of the instrument, Iranian musician Hossein Behroozinia. On sitar is maestro Mohamed Assani, on tombak is Hamin Honari, with vocals by Jamal Salavati. The musicians trace Rumi's own life journey, by playing music from Afghanistan, Iran and Turkey.

This evening of divine poetry and music took place in the stunning setting of St. Andrew's-Wesley United Church, doing justice to Rumi's words -- there are a hundred ways to kneel and kiss the ground.

This event was presented at Indian Summer Festival 2014 in Vancouver, BC and sponsored by Nature's Path Foods, with support from Banyen Books and Sound, Caravan World Rhythms, Hollyhock and Vancouver Asian Heritage Month Society.
