32.2 MILLION CASES AND COUNTING: Officials from the World Health Organization hold a press briefing on the latest developments in the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. This week, WHO outlined a cooperative, global plan to develop and distribute a vaccine by the end of 2021. Notably absent from the more than 150 countries agreeing to participate in the COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access Facility are China, Russia, and the United States. The White House announced in early September their intention to sit out the cooperative effort, which so far represents 64% of the world’s population, a ‘go-it-alone strategy’ that Lawrence Gostin, global health law professor at Georgetown University, told The Washington Post is a ‘a huge gamble.’ As President Trump continues to politicize the vaccine, even saying it could come by Election Day despite nearly universal disagreement from actual medical experts in his administration, a recent Kaiser Family Foundation poll found that 62% of Americans ‘worry that the political pressure from the Trump administration will lead the Food and Drug Administration to rush to approve a coronavirus vaccine without making sure that it is safe and effective.’ WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus made a direct appeal to wealthier nations sitting out the effort, saying, ‘This is not charity. It’s in every country’s best interest. We sink or swim together.’
