Описание к видео 06 Death Don't Have No Mercy

Composed by @paulwhetstone0473/Rev. Gary Davis 2011
Davis was one of the great Piedmont blues guitarist who lived in Durham, NC in the mid-twentieth century. Characteristic of Piedmont blues, this piece uses a 16 bar structure and derives in part from ragtime piano.

The idea for this piano cycle arose while driving through the rural Piedmont of North Carolina with my Aunt Gloria and Uncle Tony after a big Whetstone family dinner on Easter Sunday 2010. The more I thought about the project, the more appropriate it seemed to work with North Carolina roots music. First, Earl Scruggs and I share the same hometown of Shelby, NC, where I first encountered blues and bluegrass. Second, although I've always enjoyed roots music, I had never made a thorough recording of it. And third, I was in the process of leaving my home state to start a new home in Ann Arbor, Michigan with my life partner and muse, Arielle Cooley. So, WhetStoneSoup is my tribute to all of the NC roots musicians who have influenced me through the years. In addition to the artists listed in the playlist tracks, here is an incomplete list of bands and individuals who have been an inspiration to me: The Red Clay Ramblers, Shady Grove Band, The Bluegrass Experience, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Chatham County Line, Footloose, Contrazz, Rebecca & The Hi-Tones, David DiGiuseppe, Scott Sawyer, Etta Baker, Lightnin' Wells, Shirley Caeser and Cool John Ferguson.

The sixteen tracks on WhetStoneSoup are arranged in groups of four, with the first of each group based on one or more fiddle tunes. The second is based on a blues guitar song, while the third is influenced by banjo stylings. A contra waltz rounds off each set.

My channel is best sampled by selecting a playlist of interest and listening to its tracks in order. Why? Because each playlist is composed as a themed piano cycle which takes the listener on a musical journey. These pieces also represent a personal diary starting in 2004 with my home along the Eno River State Park in Durham, North Carolina to Ann Arbor, Michigan and ending in 2014 with my current home in Walla Walla, Washington. Thirteen piano cycles using a wide palette were composed in this ten year period and I hope listeners will find something appealing among them.
