Yosemite is great to visit all year round. Winter time is a rare time when you can explore Yosemite without crowds. However, driving to Yosemite during winter can be tricky. Some roads are closed due to snow, usually Highway 120 (Tioga Road). When the Tioga Road is closed, it is not possible to drive to Tuolumne Meadows or enter Yosemite National Park from the east. All other park entrances, including those along Highway 120 from the west, Hetch Hetchy, Highway 140, and Highway 41, remain open all year. To be safe, remember to check online or call for road closure information before your trip.
My family recently had a trip to Yosemite from San Jose. It's 4 hour drive, via Highway 140, which seems to be the safest choice it's has little or no snow. When inside Yosemite Valley, it's required to have snow chains for your car. Do remember to bring snow chains with you!
