There is a realization that although green revolution has changed the face of agriculture, yet poor and marginal farmers are less benefitted. Similarly, modern agricultural practices which actually ushered in the green revolution has done more harm to natural resources partly due to imbalanced and inadequate supplementation of nutrients. Similarly, the use of pesticides also caused harm to natural resources, often because of excessive and faulty use of these chemicals. As a result, there is a new awakening on resource management in agriculture. It is also said that Green Revolution technologies were inappropriate for marginal and poor farmers, but peasants were excluded from access to credit, information, technical support and other services that would have helped them use and adapt these new inputs if they so desired. Clearly, the historical challenge for the publicly funded agricultural research community is to refocus its efforts on marginalized farmers and agro ecosystems and become catalysts in their sustained growth, which will lead to the welfare of agriculture and country. Keeping this as backdrop, the Central Agricultural University, Imphal is organizing a three day web-conference on “Agriculture Resource Management for Atmanirbhar Bharat” from 17th to 19th July, 2020 at College of Agriculture, Iroisemba, Manipur, India. The conference aims to take stock of the prevailing agricultural resources and their management strategies and how to augment them so that its benefits are reaped by the small stakeholders residing in diverse and adverse conditions in a sustainable way based on the use of local resources and indigenous knowledge. The conference will be highlighting research priorities based on the socio economic needs and environmental circumstances of resource-poor farmers. Issues such as policy formulation, at institutional level as well as for research and development are expected to be dealt intrinsically to make sure that agro-ecological alternatives are adopted to make them equitably and broadly accessible, and multiplied so that their full benefit for sustainable food security can be realized. Equitable market opportunities emphasizing fair trade and other mechanisms that link farmers and consumers more directly will also be a part of the discussion.
