In this video, we take a look at the Grumman XF5F Skyrocket, a carrier-based fighter and interceptor from early-to-mid World War II. We then move over to the US Navy in WWII, in their effort to increase the speed of carrier-based fighters. We then talk about the Skyrocket design, with its unique and bizarre-looking wing-first design. We talk about why this was done, how the design evolved in its earliest stages, and how its initial performance was both promising and disappointing. We talk about the failed attempts to improve the Skyrocket, how Grumman asked the Navy to cancel the project for them, how Grumman tried proposing the design to the Army in the XP-50, and how the XF5F legacy continued through the F7F Tigercat. We end by talking about the legacy the Skyrocket could have had for carrier-based fighters, if not for the rise of jet engine technology.
