Why the Rule Exists
Extreme Remoteness: Antarctica is one of the most isolated places on Earth. Medical emergencies are very difficult to handle, especially during the winter when evacuation is impossible.

Appendix Risk: Appendicitis can be life-threatening if untreated. In the past, doctors overwintering in Antarctica were required to have their appendix removed preemptively, since they would be the only medical professional available.

Wisdom Teeth Risk: Impacted wisdom teeth can cause sudden infections or pain. Removing them beforehand reduces the chance of dental emergencies.

🩺 Current Medical Requirements
General Expeditioners: Most workers and visitors undergo thorough medical and dental checks before deployment. If your appendix or wisdom teeth are healthy, removal is usually not required.

Doctors Staying Over Winter: Australian Antarctic doctors must have their appendix removed before wintering, because they are the sole medical provider on station.

Long-Term Staff: Some programs recommend removal of wisdom teeth if they are likely to cause problems, but it is not universally enforced.

Tourists: Cruise passengers and short-term visitors do not need these surgeries.
