There have been a lot of mixed feelings when people hear a guide calling out parts of a song in the modern age.

Out of all the comments, one sticks out more than the rest. But before we go into that, I would like to explain what the point of a guide track is.

What is a guide track? After some digging, a simplified definition is a simplified version of a song and will contain just enough information to know where you are in the tune.

The guide by no means is a cheat sheet for musicians. To effectively play the music, you still need to know the song from front and back.

If you only go by the guide, you could easily miss parts of the song because the guide only cues a measure or so before what section you are about to play.

You need to know the song for the guide to make sense.

For these reasons, a comment like “I don't like that. A drummer should express himself with creative ideas. Not with this planned out in-ear bulls!$?” doesn’t make sense.

A guide doesn’t depict your creativity or what you will play. This creativity will be determined by what the song needs and what is appropriate to play.

A guide track validates what you are aware of and what will happen. Ensuring everyone is on the same page so no one gets lost!
