In this video we’re going to go over the 9 criteria that make-up narcissistic personality disorder. As we go through these narcissistic traits and symptoms, I want you to rate how mild or extreme you see these traits in yourself, or even someone you know, on a piece of paper.

Use the following rating scale: 0=absent, 1=mild, 2=moderate, 3=severe, 4=extreme.

This exercise is not for diagnosis, but to help you build insight into areas you need to focus on or how someone else in your life sees the world, acts, and reacts form your point of view.

A diagnosis of NPD should only be given by a trained mental health provider. Also, NPD, like all diagnoses, are used for treatment or assistance to manage the maladaptive aspects of the disorder, not for self-definition. Lastly, NPD is very rare. You would have to meet 5 or more of the traits and symptoms we’re going to go over and they must create impairment in your ability to take care of yourself or others, and to get through work or school. Most people have narcissistic traits that are mild or even moderate and this does not necessitate NPD.
