Joyland is a 2022 Urdu and Punjabi-language Pakistani drama film written and directed by Saim Sadiq in his feature film directorial debut. The film stars Ali Junejo, Rasti Farooq, Alina Khan, Sarwat Gilani, and Salmaan Peerzada. It centers on the Rana family, whose patriarch yearns for the birth of another boy.



Full Story :- The youngest son in a traditional Pakistani family takes a job as a backup dancer in a Bollywood-style burlesque, and he quickly becomes infatuated with the strong-willed trans woman who runs the show. As the happily patriarchal Rana family craves for the birth of a baby boy, the youngest of the Rana men secretly joins an erotic dance theatre and finds himself falling for a fiercely ambitious trans starlet. Their impossible love story slowly illuminates the entire Rana family's desire for a sexual rebellion.
The extended Rana family lives together in a house that the tradition-minded patriarch, Abba, says has been theirs since before the partition. The household includes his two sons, Saleem and Haider, their respective wives, and Saleem's small children. The younger son, Haider (Ali Junejo), who is already married but without work, reluctantly takes a job that a friend arranges for him in a burlesque theater. Too embarrassed to tell his father that his job is dancing in a troupe, he says that he is the manager. With Haider employed, his wife Mumtaz (Rasti Farooq) is forced to quit her job so that she can stay at home. As Haider begins to explore an infatuation with Biba (Alina Khan), the larger-than-life trans woman who runs the show, it becomes painfully apparent how much the entire family struggles with the constrictions of traditional family and gender expectations in Pakistan. Apparently close-knit, living in close quarters, the family members are separated by gulfs of loneliness and by secrets, unable to acknowledge the suffering or the desire of the other-until it is too late. When Haider's wife Mumtaz tells him that she is pregnant, they cry together in a stark scene that shows the complexity of their relationship which is suffused with a genuine tenderness that cannot bridge the gap between them. Likewise, Haider's short-lived relationship with Biba is never consummated but ends abruptly in an awkward moment revealing Haider's naivete and misunderstanding of Biba's desires and, more importantly, his own. Haider has recurrently linked love with forbidden love (he played Juliet in a school play, he says) and with death. At issue is the impossibility of acting on his own, unstated, queer desire-and Haider never does. In this regard, it's worth noting that the film's opening sequence that shows Haider playing with his nieces while wearing a sheet as a ghost not only anticipates the closing sequence, it suggests that Haider already occupies a kind of death-in-life. Beautifully filmed with textures of dancing light reminiscent of the patterns and colors of fine saris and shalwar-kameezes, the movie was aptly called a "love letter to Pakistan" by Malala Yousafzai, the Nobel Laureate who was an executive producer for the film
