The Participatory Grant Making (PGM) project, initiated by Transform Trade, aims to promote local development by empowering communities to choose projects that best address their needs.

In 2024, as Transform Trade concluded its operations in Kenya, the project was handed over to the Kenya Community Development Foundation (KCDF), leveraging their experience in community-driven initiatives like the Pamoja for Change Project, which focuses on shifting power to communities.

Under the PGM project, Community-Based Organisations (CBOs) contribute either cash or in-kind, with Transform Trade providing additional funding as needed. This model fosters project ownership and sustainability.

Kamaki Farmers’ Cooperative Society in Kitui County is one of the beneficiaries, implementing an apiary project. Faced with recurring droughts, the cooperative chose beekeeping as a sustainable solution. They harvest honey, package it, and distribute it to markets across the country.

To support the bees, the group requested dam liners to create water sources by digging small dams and lining them with the materials, ensuring a reliable water supply for the bees to thrive and establish more colonies.

This initiative demonstrates the power of communities to make decisions and leverage their resources to drive local development.
