After licking his wounds from his tactical defeat at Kernstown, Major General Stonewall Jackson spends the month of April reorganizing his Valley District command and gathering his strength. In the early days of May, 1862, Jackson moves south down the Valley in an elaborate ruse to keep the Federals guessing what his target will be. He suddenly appears in front of McDowell, Virginia, at the far southwestern corner of the Valley along the Allegheny Mountains, where he prepares to make battle against the Union forces of Major General John C. Frémont's Mountain Department. He positions his troops atop Sitlington Hill, a high hill overlooking the battlefield, and waits for the Federals under Robert H. Milroy to come to him. This time, Stonewall Jackson is well-prepared for the battle to come, and is ready to strike back in force.
