Navaratri Kolu, also known as Golu or Bommai Kolu, is a vibrant South Indian tradition where a stepped display of dolls and idols is arranged to celebrate the victory of good over evil. It is a sacred narrative, an artistic expression, and a social event all rolled into one.
The Significance: The Kolu represents the universe. The steps (typically odd-numbered: 3, 5, 7, or 9) signify the hierarchy of life, with the divine at the top. It's an invitation to the Goddess Durga and her divine court to descend upon the household during the nine nights of festivities.
How to Set Up a Navratri Kolu (Step-by-Step):
1. Preparation & The Steps (Padis): Choose a clean, prominent place in your home, usually the living room. Build the steps using wooden planks or specially designed Kolu stands. The number of steps depends on tradition and space; 5 and 7 are most common. Cover each step with a clean, beautiful cloth (often white, red, or kanjeevaram silk).
2. Arranging the Divine Tiers:
· Topmost Step (1st Padi): This is reserved for the most sacred deities. Place the Kalasham (a sacred pot filled with water, topped with mango leaves and a coconut), idols of the Hindu Trinity (Brahma, Vishnu, Maheshwara), and the family's Istha Devata (personal deity).
· Second Step: Dedicate this to avatars of Lord Vishnu (like Rama, Krishna) and Goddess Lakshmi.
· Third Step: Place idols of other Gods and Gurus here.
· Fourth & Fifth Steps: This is for national heroes, saints, and revered figures like Sai Baba, Shivaji, or Rani Lakshmibai.
· Sixth & Seventh Steps: Showcase scenes from daily life, society, and mythology. This is where creativity shines! You can have dolls depicting a marriage, a vegetable market, a park, animals, and chettiyars (traditional merchants).
· Lowest Level (Floor): Create a "painted forest" or a scene with clay toys, often featuring the Marapachi Bommai (traditional wooden couple dolls).
3. The Surroundings: Decorate the area with fairy lights, lamps (deepams), and fresh flowers. Place a rangoli (kolam) at the base. You can add a "park" with mirrors for ponds and miniature fences.
4. Daily Rituals: Every evening, during the Kolu, women invite friends and neighbors. They sing devotional songs (bhajans), perform aarti, and exchange gifts—typically coconuts, blouse pieces, betel leaves, nuts, turmeric, kumkum, and prasadam (like sundal—a steamed lentil snack).
The Essence: It's not just a display; it's a spiritual journey. It fosters community, celebrates art and tradition, and invokes the divine feminine energy into the home.
