Here is why Ulan Bator, Mongolia's capital, will surprise you. In one day you can roam the palace of the Mongolian 8th bogd khan or rub shoulders with Buddhist monks in monasteries, while skyscrapers rise tall in the background, trying to entice you for a cocktail or two in a rooftop bar. It is a great stop on the Trans Siberian (or Trans Mongolian) railway.
